Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Umar Jallo, has lauded Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama for his firm stance on the Palestinian cause and his call for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza.
In a statement, Sheikh Jallo said President Mahama has shown the world that “dignity cannot be bought or given as a gift; it is a quality that remains with its owner even in the most difficult moments.”
He praised the Ghanaian leader for demonstrating true humanity by calling for compassion toward the people of Gaza, condemning Israel’s killings, forced displacements, and expulsions of Palestinians, and urging an immediate end to the war.
The Sheikh further highlighted Mahama’s reminder that justice means giving everyone their due rights, stressing that the Palestinians deserve their full rights and dignity as human beings. Quoting from the Holy Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Sheikh Jallo noted: “Indeed, Allah commands you to give to relatives and forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression. He instructs you that you may remember.”
He recalled that Ghana recognized the State of Palestine in 1988, a decision that reflected the country’s commitment to justice and solidarity. Sheikh Jallo said Islam emphasizes the protection of every individual’s rights, whether male or female, while safeguarding human dignity.
From this standpoint, he called for promoting a culture of dialogue and communication between different religions and cultures to foster a more peaceful and understanding world — a vision he said was echoed by President Mahama.
Sheikh Jallo also stressed that the demand for justice for Palestine aligns with Islamic teachings, which call for establishing a society built on peace, prosperity, and fairness. He emphasized that God sent messengers to ensure that people uphold justice on earth, making it a divine mission for humanity.
Importantly, he called on Islamic scholars and organizations in Ghana and beyond to praise President Mahama’s bold move and to lend their voices in support of ending the Gaza war. According to him, the collective voice of religious leaders and humanitarian groups can amplify the call for peace and justice and strengthen Ghana’s moral leadership on the global stage.
Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Yusuf Jallo said: “We say to President Mahama, go forward, for the rich Islamic community is with you heart and soul. May Allah protect you from evil. Ameen.”
